Jarvis, Evelyn Monique {I8643} (b. 26 JUL 1903, d. 28 JUN 1977)
Note: [beshore53.FTW]

[v05t3016_Messier.FTW]

Lived for a time on what is now Jarvis St. At that time there were only
three houses on the south side of River St : along the Conn. river bank,, the Obrey`s and Peter Jarvis` and west of Peter`s was the large home of Grandma Jarvis. About 1907 they moved to what is now (1995) the Elks Club. It was a two family house but soon converted to one family as the families resources increased. Race horses were stabled in the rear of the property and later after the death of Peter, the place was converted to the Jarvis Inn.
Evelyn graduated from Windsor High School and attended Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
She was in Claremont Hospital passing a kidneystone, when a slighly different pain announced the arrival of 8 lb. 2 oz, red haired son Gerald J. on Aug 4, 1930. Another trip to the Hospital in 1939 with ruptured appendix. This was just before the common use of penicillin, so she was stuffed like a turkey with sulfur drugs, partially sewed up with a wick protruding to drain away the peritonitis. Miraculously ( According to Dr Keely ) she survived.
In any event, throughout her life she was very active, always on the go, a real " shop til you drop " ( you, not her ). A vivacious, attractive women who, in spite of her many trips to the operating room, looked 10 to 15 years younger than she was. Loved and doted on her grandchildren. Was an expert semstress and kept her grandaughter Susan, and later Marybeth, dressed up like little dolls. She would play toss and catch with the boys and kick the soccer ball with
them. Gave up trying to sing to the children (she really could not carry a
tune). Instead, when they were little, if they were really fussy or sick,
she would comfort them by pacing the floor while patting them on the back and
saying over and over ( and over ) " there, there, there, there ...". This
trait was later repeated --
In was in 1778, the year after mother died, that Shirley was in the hospital after brain surgery. After our hopes had turned to fear because she was returned to the I.C.U. with mennengitis, it became doubtful if she would in fact survive, I went home one night tired and depressed. In bed sleepy thoughts by habit turned to prayer. I recall wondering why my prayers were just not being answered. I started a sort of conversation ( prayer ? ) with my departed parents. In the past, and not just when I was a kid, they always seemed to come to my rescue when I really needed help. Thoughts like -- " Hey somthings wrong, I just dont seem to be getting through, can`t you guys help get the message to the right party?" Sleep came with thoughts like that floating around in my drowsy consciousness.
The next morning when I arrived at the I.C.U. Shirley was much better! The tubes were out, she was propped up in bed, groggy but awake. Later on that morning, when she had one of her moments of energy and could talk a little, she said somthing that made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.
" The funniest thing happened last night, " she said, "I woke up and your mother was sitting next to the bed; she was patting my arm and saying, like she used to with the children, -- there, there, there ..."

In fact later on Shirley recalled the "out of body -- long tunnel with a light
at the end-- already departed relatives waiting by the light-- then all
slowly retreating" typical of what you hear from many who have had a near
death experience. Then she "awoke" to the sound of " there - there " !?

Thanks Mom !

Jarvis, Peter Edward {I8644} (b. 28 MAY 1872, d. 22 APR 1934)
Note: [beshore53.FTW]

[v05t3016_Messier.FTW]

He was the only boy in a family of 11. Three girls died in childhood,
three girls married and four remained spinsters, living together in
Windsor well into their 80's, except Mary, who lived to be 92. Peter gave
his occupation as Barber on his marriage cert. to Mary Murphy, however he
soon opened a meat and provisions market in the "old constitution house"
at its old location on depot Ave. He was sucessful and soon enlarged at a
new place, the Putnam Block on Main St. at the foot of State St., here he
sold grocerys, meats, produce, prepared things like "boudin" (blood -
sausage), tubs of lard, barrels of pickels, barrels of hard soda crackers,
"head cheese", "cracklins" (pork renderings from the lard making
process-like frying lean salt pork until its hard and crispy only in this
case the pork had not been salted), cottage cheese, and more. He made his
own corned beef, pickeled his tripe and would keep privately owned sides
of beef in his walk-in cooler and delivered cuts when requested. This he
did mostly for the wealthy members of the Cornish Colony. I remember some
hanging unsliced chunks of filet mignon that were covered with a fuzzy
mold, "aged to perfection", he would say.
He was also the S.S.Pierce dealer in the area, a mark of food quality. He had
a horse drawn meat wagon which he would have an employee drive around to
many of the neighborhoods, ringing a bell, and selling to the housewives.
When he eventually got a motorvehicle he would take telephone orders and
make home deliveries. I can recall when I was a child, the neighborhood
kids would wait for the Ice Man from Stacey's who would use an ice pick to
chip off slivers for us to suck on, also for my grandfather's meat truck
when we would all be given a piece of cracklin or a pinch of raw hamburg.
His store would smell so good, probably because of all the things that
were sold in bulk gave off an aroma of good things to eat.

Peter and his men all wore straw hats, white shirts with black bow ties
and had a sort of wrapping of leather at their sleeve cuffs, probably to
save on wear and tear; also they wore a stretch band around their arms
between elbow and shoulder to keep their shirt sleeves up. About 1905 he
moved from the Jarvis compound on River St. to what is now (1994) The Elks
Club on Main St. The carriage horses as well as some race horses (trotters
and pacers ) were kept in stables to the rear, between the house and the
Mill Brook. Later, when the Jarvis Inn was in existence, the stables were
turned into garages and still later , when the great depression was
fullblown, Clayton raised thousands of chickens there in the garages now
converted into chicken pens.

Gervais-Jarvis, Pierre {I8646} (b. 4 JUN 1837, d. 31 DEC 1893)
Note: [beshore53.FTW]

[v05t3016_Messier.FTW]

Family tradition that Pierre, together with thee of his brothers, came
from Iberville, Que. to Vermont in the mid 1800`s. Pierre settled in
Windsor, was gardener for Emerson at what later became the Windsor
Hospital and later the Stoughton House. He had 11 children of which there
was only one son, Peter, to pass on the name. Edouard and Francois went to
the Ascutneyville, Vt area, had farms and are the ancestors of many
bearing the name of Jarvis. Another brother may have gone to R.I. Pierre`s
mother-in-law, Monique (St. Marie) Field Lamothe, widow of John Field and
later Pierre Lamothe is buried in the Jarvis family lot in St. Francis
Cemetery in Windsor, Vt. GJR
