[v23t1954_grassiot.FTW]
It appears that David was one of the first of the Hebert line to leave the Montreal area in 200 years. He worked in the Pembina area ( Pembina, North Dakota ) in the 1830's as a boatman, probably on the Red River which flows north through Winnipeg and on to Lake Winnipeg. Sometime prior to 1845 he moved to what is now St. Paul, Minnesota or close to the area of.
It was here in St. Paul that he married Marie Madeleine Larocque, who had also moved there from the Red River area. It is unknown if they knew each other while in the Pembina area. Of interest to note that David was 40 years of age before he married. He was 63 years of age when his last child "Louis Inez" was born.
When David moved east to what is now St. Paul, Minnesota it was not much more settled or civilized than was Pembina. The Indians still roamed freely in and out of the small settlements, beging and bartering for goods with the whites and sometimes running off a cow for meat. After their marriage they settled down and raised 10 children, all born in or around St. Paul.
David sat in on the Stillwater Convention on August 26, 1848 that led to the creation of the Territory of Minnesota in 1849. David was one of the 61 signers of the bill or application which was delivered to Congress to be ratified. The territory that was launched at Stillwater in 1848 became a state 10 years later.
The only link with the outside world in the early 1850's was the Mississippi River and it was froze over as a rule from December to about the first of March. Logging and saw milling was a major industry at this time utilizing the river for log transporting and power to run the saw mill. Lumber demand was so high locally because of the influx of immigrants that they could not keep up and rarely were they able to ship lumber elsewhere.
The Eastern Sioux Indians rose up in revolt in 1862 killing hundreds of people, taking some captive before being crushed by the Militia close to Minneapolis. Cause: No rations issued to them because of the Civil War. David's wife, Marie, was on friendly terms with the Indians from the reservation. They even raised two Indian children , a boy and a girl.

Marie Madeleine was born at Fort Douglas, Red River Settlement, in Manitoba, Canada.
Fort Douglas was a Hudson's Bay Company's Fort which in its early years (1813 - 1821) served as a refuge for the early settlers brought to the Red River area by Lord Selkirk. It is now located in the middle of down town Winnipeg with only a small monument to depict where it once stood.
Madeleine probably never had any schooling as the 1860 census (Scott Co., Minnesota, page 54) states that she could not read or write.
It is likely that Madeleine met her Husband in Pembina or the Red River area of North Dakota, and the Province of Manitoba as her family were living in the area at the time, and they later on were married in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The population of Dakota Territory, which included both North and South Dakota, plus parts of Montana and Wyoming, at this period was below Two Thousand people.
Madeleine was very friendly with the Indians from the reservation, which they lived close to in Minnesota, and helped them when they were ill with her home remedies.

Married Richard Reaney in 1866 and to this union were born 11 children.
Flavia was caught out in a snow and ice storm at night. She was found with her legs and arms frozen. She died 9 days later.
Her husband, Richard, had already preceeded her in death, so the children from 4 years to mid teens were well scattered to be raised. Some were given out to non releatives.

NOTE NAME CHANGE: Mary Ebare
Mary Ebare (with this name spelling) is listed as the Midwife attending the birth of Lewis Andrew Herbert in 1896, on his Birth Certificate.
Mary would have been 46 years old at this time, and it is assumed that she was still unmarried. She evidently changed the spelling of her last name to the way it is pronounced, as did some of her brothers.
