Lewis moved from Minnesota to the Coeur D'Alene, Idaho area with his family when he was about 10 years old. He did not receive much of an education past the 4th grade because of the necessity of helping the family make a living. He worked around Coeur D'Alene hauling logs out of the woods by sled and horse team and receiving $5.00 per thousand board feet when he was young and prior to being called into the service.
Lewis served in the U. S. Army at Fort Lewis, Washington during World War 1. He only served about five months time before the war ended. Lewis was always very proud of the fact that he had served time in the service during the war.
Lewis and his father, Louis Inez, both got jobs working for the Milwaukee Railroad, which had a round house in Spirit Lake, Idaho. Louis Inez stayed on to work for the railroad but Lewis, the son, went to work in the woods. Lewis worked on the flume for the Pan Handle Lumber Co. which had a total of about 25 miles of flume to get the logs out of the woods to the lake and then to the mill by raft, 7 miles away. This being mostly a seasonal job, because of the lake freezing over from Thanksgiving till March. During the winter lay-off Lewis done numerous things to make a little money. One winter he cut ice from the lake with a hand ice saw and carried it to his old truck to transport it to his garage. There he layered the ice in saw dust from the mill till the garage was full. The ice was then later sold in the summer. Lewis, his father and brother-in-law Joe Schinzel all work to help built the new school at Spirit Lake. After several years living in the company house Lewis built their own home in town.
In 1926 Louis Inez left his wife to go back to Wisconsin to look for buried treasure, and it became Lewis' chore to look after his mother. Lewis was down in Oregon as far as Roseburg and had decided to move there where one could work the year around. When he returned home they put their house up for sale and some time later sold it. By this time his brother-in-law, who had taken a fall and hurt his back, was getting worse and finally succumbed in 1929. Lewis felt that he could not leave his sister and his mother without some one to look after them, decided to stay. In October of that same year, the crash of Wall Street occurred. Having sold their house he rented a small place down on the lake where they lived until about 1934.
After the crash of Wall Street in 1929, jobs and money were hard to get. By 1932 / 3 the depression was at its peak and finding work was harder than working the job after one found it. A Dollar a day or 10 cents an hour was a good wage in the Pacific Northwest, if one was lucky enough to have a job. With no work to be found in Spirit Lake area Lewis moved his family to the Coeur D'Alene area in 1934 and joined the CCC's (Civilian Conservation Corps). He was with them but 2 months ( July and August) when he was given a job clearing brush for a right of way for the Telephone Co. He received his discharge from the CCC's and went to work for Iver Molstead.
By this time, Lewis' sister, Emma, was being courted by Iver Molstead and it is a strong possibility that Iver procured this job for Lewis to please and advance his desires toward Emma. Lewis never cared for the Molstead family and because Iver had hopes of receiving Emma's hand did not change his feelings. As a job, Lewis preferred this one to staying in the CCC's and living in camp away from his family. The job consisted of clearing brush for the right-of-way for the phone line. Lewis worked the job for a number of months although he did not care for the conditions he worked under.
It has been asked by Emma's descendants why Lewis left a good job with the Phone Company, that Iver got him, to move to Oregon. It appears that it was not a good job, it was just a job of clearing brush for a right-of-way, and working for one he did not care much for.
As the job did not work out for him, he moved his family to Cannon Beach, Oregon, where he worked on the Arch Cape Tunnel on Highway 101. After the completion of the tunnel he worked for the Bonniville Power Administration, clearing right of way for the power line. A lot of the clearing was through heavily timbered country, which he was used to working in. For a time Lewis owned and operated a small fish and sea food market in Cannon Beach where he sold fish to the tourists and residents. He would buy his fish off the boats in Astoria and his son Harold would supply him with clams dug from the beaches. He moved again to Seattle, Washington and worked for the Boeing Aircraft factory, where he was when World War 2 broke out. In April 1942 they moved again to Sweet Home, Oregon. Here he worked in the lumber industry and on a dredge on the Willamette River. He later went into business for himself as a contract painter, which he followed till his retirement in 1958.
Lewis had a great love for animals and often talked about his team of horses which he hauled logs out of the woods with, on sleds. He was very proud of his teams. He would treat his dogs as though they were people, and make over them until they were spoiled rotten. He once packed his Cocker Spaniel (which loved water) across a crab hole at the beach so the dog would not have to get wet, only to find out he'd forgot about his pocket watch which was now full of salt water. Though he loved to hunt, he hatted to see any animal hurt.
He done many things during his retirement years. He was the commander of the World War 1 Veterans in Sweet Home, and held office in the Senior Citizens Club, which he and wife helped to organize.
He is interned at Gilliland Cemetery in Sweet Home, Oregon, as is his wife Katherine.

Katherine married Lewis Herbert in a double ring ceremony where brother & sister married brother & sister ( Emma Herbert married Joesph Schinzel ). After the marriage, both couples moved to Spirit Lake, Idaho where all the children of both couples were born. Katherine and Lewis lived in a wall tent in back of the house which Lewis' father and mother lived when they first arrived. They were still living in the tent when their first child was born, although she was born in the house. A short time later they were able to get a company house belonging to the Pan Handle Lbr. Co., which Lewis work for.
When Lewis' father left for Minnesota in 1926 to seek his buried treasure and the death of Joe Schinzel, leaving Lewis' sister a widow in 1929, Lewis took it on himself to see to their welfare. This was a large burden on their family and Katherine at times resented the need to overlook her family to care for her in-laws.
They lived in Spirit Lake until about 1934 when the lack of work and jobs, brought on by the depression, forced them to look elsewhere for a livelihood.
Katherine was a person with a lot of love in her heart and dedicated to her family and their offspring's. Lewis, being a jovial and care-free person gave her some very memorable times, but these same antics of his could also be trying at times, not only with Kate but with the rest of the family.
She was the type of Grandmother that one reads about, for at Thanksgiving and Christmas it was off to Grandmas house for dinner and festive times that no one will forget. Birthdays were treated in a similar manner and the family was drawn together for that family members day. She made a close knit family of her children, their husbands, wives and grand-children.
Kate and Lewis celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1979 with the whole family in attendance, and saw 67 anniversaries come and go together.

Harold was born and grew up in and around Spirit Lake and Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. In 1936 he moved with his folks to Cannon Beach, Oregon where he finished his schooling. The family moved to Seattle, Washington and Harold took a job in the railroad yard, where he worked till World War 2 broke out. Harold enlisted in the U.S. Navy shortly after, and was stationed on board the U.S.S. Hermitage, a troop transport converted from an Italian Passenger Linner, carring troops overseas.
When Harold was discharged from the Navy, after the War was over he came to Sweet Home, Oregon to be with his wife, Verna Fielding, whom he had married in 1943 during the war. Verna was staying with Harolds folks, who had moved to Sweet Home. Harold was hired as the Turbine Operator by the Santiam Lumber Co. in Sweet Home, later Willamette Industries, a job which he held till he retired in 1984. His tenure was the longest of any employee at his retirement.
Harold and Verna separated in 1957. It was a marriage that was doomed from the start with niether party being wholly to blame.
Harold carried the nickname CHUM from his early childhood and was always referred to as such by the family. All his Nieces and Nephews dearly loved their Uncle Chum and he in turn had great love for them.
He was an avid hunter and loved camping out. Most of his hunting trips were with his father and brother-in-law, Richard A. Lillich. Harold and Richard were more like brothers than in-laws. At the beach he was very good at digging clams in the surf as he learned when he was still in school and dug commercially.
Harold finally did remarry shortly before his death to a women with whom he had lived with for close to thirty years. Her name was Darlene Wells. Harold married her so she might receive what ever benefits he left upon his death, such as house and what savings they had. Harold and Darlene had no children, but Darlene was the mother to four children by a previous marriage. What Harold left behind was soon squandered, something Harold knew would take place.

Louis was 12 years old when a horse he was riding stepped in a hole, fell and rolled over on him. His leg was broke at the knee and to complicate this he developed lockjaw. The Doctors mended his leg but were unable to do anything about the lockjaw. His mother using an old remedy, heated up a turnip in boiling water till it was very hot, then cut it in half. With half in each hand she slapped them on his cheeks. This caused him to give out with an agonizing scream from the heat. This did help to loosen his jaw up, but he went through life only able to open his mouth part way. His leg was also stiff and he was unable to bend it through out his life. When seated he had to have the leg straight out in front of him and resting on his heal on the floor or on a stool or hassock. He had a wooden chair at home which he cut several inches off the legs to make it lower so that he might be a little more comfortable when sitting.
They left Minnesota about 1902 and moved to North Dakota where they stayed for about a year. Louis worked at a grain elevator in Hickson, N. D. They moved on to Idaho in 1904 and made a homestead entry at Cougar Gulch, just outside of Coeur D'Alene in August of 1911, although he moved on to the place in May of 1909. He built his house, which was a log house, 18 x 20 feet, and had it completed in July of that same year. He took up the homestead not for farming, but for the timber value. But fate was against him, for in 1910 a forest fire sweep the area and burned the timber. They were forced to evacuate their home during the fire but his luck did hold out as it burned all around the house leaving them something to return to. They stayed on the place, although the timber was gone. It was not farm land, being rather steep hilly country and he was able to clear only 7 acres in the 10 years he was on the place. The name, Cougar Gulch, actualy fits the discription of his property and the surrounding area. Even though the timber was gone and the land devastated, he did make his entry claim for the land in august of 1911 and held onto the place with enough improvements untill his proof of intent was satisfied in June of 1919.
Louis may have worked in Spirit Lake, Idaho during World War I. It is known that he did work there after the war and on into the mid 1920's for the Milwaukee Railroad round house.
Many men have their dreams, but never attempt to seek them out because of their families and children and of course money. Louis was different in this respect, though he loved his family, children and grand children, he packed up in 1926 (for a second time ) to seek out one of his dreams. He said good-by to his family and left for Wisconsin, promising to return in a short time. He was seeking a buried treasure at Deer Ears Island near Lake Superior. He never returned. He evidently lived in Mendota, Minnesota at a place called Camp Mendota for 15 months prior to his death. He was admitted to the Ancker Hospital on 28 March 1934 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He passed away at the hospital on 13 Apr 1934, from cancer of the stomach. Evidently he was known as being in the area by the rest of his brothers, who knew he had relatives in Idaho or eastern Washington. The authorities (assumed) were forced to try broadcasting on the radio to find any relatives living in the northern Idaho area to inform them of his condition and/ or death. It is unsure how, but his wife and son did receive the information some time after his death.
Since his immediate family (wife and children) were not there or notified when the head stone was purchased, the inscription on his head stone reads Louis Abar, the last name which was used by his brother Peter Abar.
NOTE: Louis changed his name from Hebert ( pronounced ABARE, AY-BEAR, EBARE, ABAR) to Herbert. Louis said, "If they are going to pronounce Hebert as Herbert, than that is the way it is going to be." His other brothers also changed their last names, but used the spelling of the way to pronounce it, thus Abar.

Anna came to the United States in 1888 when she was 16 with her sister, Emma, who
later returned to Norway.
After her husband, Louis, left in 1926 she spent the rest of her life single, living with her daughter, Emma, most of the time.
Some relatives have wondered what Anna ever saw in that Frenchman, (meaning her husband, Louis) she coming from a fairly well off Norwegian family and he, the son of a
French Canadian frontiersman and boatmen. Their culture and upbringing were quiet
different in all respects, and he possessed very little education.
Shortly before her death in 1941 and World War 2, she was requested to return to Norway in regard to a possible inheritance which was wrapped up in the courts between Norway
and Denmark. She never returned, nor wrote them. It is believed this may have been
associated with the maritime or shipping industry as her father was a ships captain and
said to have owned his own vessel. Nothing more has ever been heard of on this matter. Germany overran both countries during the war and confiscated every thing useful to them.

Emma and Joseph Schinzel were married in a double ring ceremony along with their brother and sister, Lewis Herbert and Katherine Schinzel. in Spokane, Washington.
Joseph died of injuries received in a fall in 1929 and Emma was left with two children to raise. After almost 10 years, Emma remarried in 1938 to Iver Molstead. When she did she almost completely put her past life with Joseph out of mind. Her son, Robert, eventually excepted Iver, but her daughter, Marie, never fully came to terms with it and resented it quiet openly at times. With Emma it was almost as though Joseph never existed. To Emma, the past was the past, and you never talked about it, unless it was all good and something to be gained by it.
Emma worked for many years as a packager for Jacobson's Bakery in Spokane.
Emma was a very jovial person and enjoyable to visit with, making one feel that life was a bed of roses. She was very much like her brother, Lewis A. Herbert, in this respect.

Besides being brothers-in-law Joseph and Lewis Herbert were very close friends before and after their marriage to each others sister.
Joseph was a carpenter, a trade he learned from his father. He also went to school at night to study drafting to further help in his career.
Joseph hurt his back in a fall which eventually led to his death. Joseph was working on a building in down town Spokane when he fell. He steadily became worse during the following year dispite what medical attention he received. The doctors during this period of time knew too little of back problems. An autopsy showed his back had deteriorated from lack of medical attention. ( As told by Lewis A. Herbert. Lewis witnessed the autopsy ).
